The multi cultural district Lombok in Utrecht is becoming slowly an area for Yuppees. Many of these "Green Yuppees" (supporters of the leftist politcal parties) derive their identities from the multicultural aspects of the area. They integrate very well, but the traffic causes a lot of irritation moments. Dutch people are used to well organized streets, very functional, to make people move as fast as possible to their destinations. Pedestrians, cyclists, car drivers, parked cars and trees; they all have their own paths and spots with their own materials and colours. Also the main (shopping) street of Lombok is physically organized like this, but in practice it functions completely different. Cars are parking anywhere, people are chatting in the middle of the street; the street functions like a square where everything is intuitively mixed and completely undefined.
I designed a new paving for the street that ironically illustrates the situation, by using the material language of the organized street. It might be a way to accept the situation, and start also seeing the beauty of the 'slow street'.
