OBJECTS RESCOPED: our exhibition during Dutch Design Week 2011. I will show both my 'animatoria'

'Objects Rescoped' questions why things are the way they are. Wandering through a landscape of smaller and larger 'viewers', your perspective shifts from detail to overview and back again. Noticing instead of merely looking is the essential theme. The participants, who especially created new work, give their own refreshing view on re-appreciating. They are redefining the meaning of apparently ordinary things; rust turns into silver beauty as soon as you zoom in on it and a geometrical object seems to be able to create eclipses, fog and clouds.

The various projects get extra depth in a conversation on Sunday night the 23d with 're-appreciating' as a red line. Accompanied by a philosopher, a sociologist and a psychologist you will travel beyond what your eyes can see.

During the Dutch Designweek in Eindhoven I will show the concept of Story Signs in our exhibition:

"Objects in the rearview mirror are closer than they appear" takes you inside a curious world where things are turned inside out. Walking through a city of temporary houses feels like entering a book where products have become the characters of the story. Delicate and quiet, a little odd, clumsy but proud, lofty and gentle these residents show their true colors.

Continuo: "Alice in Venlo"

In collaboration with the library and the local art center I gave a workshop for a group of 30 children. They created fantastic temporary cardboard scenes of Alice in Wonderland around the city hall of Venlo:

Coppelia: van illustratie tot kostuum

In collaboration with Stijn van der Vleuten I made an exhibition about costumes of the Nationale Ballet. The costumes were designed by illustrator Sieb Posthuma and fashion designer François-Noël Cherpin. We show the story of the design proces and let the costumes dance in the air by making our own invisible mannequins...

August 2010

This summer I was invited by Rianne Makkink and Jurgen Bey to do a project as a 'designer in residence' on their farm in the Noordoostpolder. At the moment I'm doing a research on the hidden worlds behind the doors of the typical prefab barns of the area. In August I followed a group of people preparing the annual flower parade, more info soon...

This project is made possible by The Netherlands Foundation for Visual Arts, Design and Architecture.

Continuo: De Fabriek

On the 31st of march 2010 De Fabriek has reached the respectable age of 30 years. De Fabriek is a place with an amazing history where artists give other artists a chance to create and exhibit new work. 10 artists (including me) will create a new work using 30 years of history as a starting point. The opening of the exhibition and the presentation of a new book about De Fabriek will take place during a 30-hours-party (!!) on the 29th of May.

NL-RUHR: GastGastgeber

During RUHR.2010 European Capital of Culture the water tower of the railway station of Oberhausen will be transformed into a guest office / guesthouse by Studio Makkink & Bey. For every room they chose an artist to exhibit permanently and a guest artist to respond by making a new piece during his/her stay at the hotel. I'm very glad they've asked me to respond with my Story Signs on the work of Ester vd Wiel and on NL-RUHR! This gives me the opportunity to develop the idea of 'story networks', mixing physical and non-physical networks, connecting global and local identities. I think the temporary railway station hotel / office generates a perfect context.

Official opening of Buurtbank Brabant, a database of video-stories about objects in tiny museums, told by the guides of the museums in the local dialects. Most guides of these (crafts) museums have been working themselves with these objects in the past. Together with Marcia Nolte I designed the physical Buurtbank; a hybrid between a table and an archive. It makes the museums able to display the videos together with the objects, and also record the videos themselves.
